Courage in the face of ignorance

The voice of Millete Birhanemaskel should be ringing in the ears of all citizens of Nevada County. Racism and bigotry certainly abound, but yes, Ms. Birhanemaskel, ignorance is the reason for such behaviors.

It took courage and determination for Cornish miners to leave their country and come to America to be “Jacks” and “Jennies” in the mines of Nevada County. It took courage and determination for Chinese to come to America, work the railroads and mines and be delegated to Chinatown ghettos. It took determination and courage for Japanese Americans to rejoin American society after being interned as prisoners during World War II. Indeed, the list goes on and on for any distinct group or individual that dares to seek a new world and be the newcomer. But it is courage and determination that motivates one to educate others rather than bow to emotions of resentment and worse, hate. My congratulations to Ms. Birhanemaskel for her courage and intellect in the face of ignorance.
