County tax increases due to inflation violate state constitution

Upon reading John Dickey’s article in The Union, “County’s budget still looking good,” I wondered how good the budget will look when a court requires our tax assessor to comply with the state constitution. Sec. 2(b) of Article XIII of the California Constitution limits tax increases because of inflation to not more than 2 percent for any given year.

Many Nevada County homeowners’ taxes have increased far beyond this 2-percent limit. It would be prudent for those planning the county budget to have monies set aside for refunding these taxes.
