County board tables Miss America bonds

Nevada County Board of Education members tabled a motion to give $100 in U.S. savings bonds to Nevada County participants in the Miss America Pageant until the board receives an opinion on whether it’s a legal contribution.

Board member Marianne Slade-Troutman asked for more information about what constitutes a contestant and whether gifts would go to anyone who applies.

Board member Bob Stone questioned whether such a gift would be appropriate since it would go for education beyond grade 12. The board of education has jurisdiction over grades kindergarten through high school.

Board members stressed the gifts are to be earmarked for educational purposes for stage and music scholarships.
