Cottrell deserves mayorship

Last Saturday night I had the privilege to attend the tribute to Steve Cottrell at the Miners Foundry. Steve was the much deserved recipient of the Elza Kilroy Award.

I’ve known Steve more than 20 years, and I know of no one who has given more to his community than this intelligent, gentle, caring man. Elza would be extremely proud to have Steve associated with his name and legacy.

So how is it that a man that is the recipient of one of this community’s most prestigious awards has yet to be recognized and handed the gavel as mayor of Nevada City by the other members of the City Council? Who among them has ever received such an award or community recognition?

Steve has been on the City Council for 10 years, nominated for mayor six times and rejected by this biased, politically driven and self-motivated council every time. This gentle person has only one motivation to be mayor of Nevada City – he wants to do the best for it, its inhabitants and guests, but he continues to face rejection by this ungrateful council. Go figure.
