Consider timed lights

Weeks ago, I submitted this idea to Grass Valley’s Trisha Tillotson in engineering as a viable alternative to the Idaho-Maryland roundabout. Put up the same traffic signals that you use entering along freeways in Sacramento, timed to peak hours, that only permit two vehicles to proceed at a time for a very short period on a green light. There would be four sets of these signals at the existing intersection and they would alternate in a clockwise fashion which is exactly what is called for in the California DMV’s driver’s handbook, If two vehicles arrive at an intersection at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. This set of lights would eliminate the “who should go first?” problem/syndrome that wastes so much time and ties up and creates the traffic backup we are trying to eliminate.

So far, no word from Grass Valley engineering on the feasibility of this simple solution and much better fix than the roundabout idea. What do you think?
