Comparisons off base

I have read with interest the letters to the editor concerning my piece about collaboration and Mr. Brooke’s rebuttal.

While Mr. Brooke and I may be at polar opposites, I would vigorously support his right to voice his concerns, as well as The Union’s responsibility to publish diverse opinions.

I am a firm believer in free speech and, although some of the letters to the editor and Mr. Brooke’s columns have been less than flattering about me, I would defend their constitutional right of expression.

I would also like to thank The Union.

It is true that Mr. Brooke’s columns are published regularly.

But The Union has printed all my pieces whenever I have submitted them, including one I wrote while incarcerated for protesting logging.

If others in the community are troubled by Mr. Brooke’s columns, I would encourage them to submit their opinions to The Union.

In my view, the paper has been fair and balanced, devoting a great deal of copy space to environmental matters.

I would request that those who disagree with my views refrain from comparing me to Osama bin Laden.

My brother, who is an attorney with the Navy, works at the Pentagon.

He could have been killed on Sept. 11.

My father recently retired after 33 years with the Central Intelligence Agency.

My mother also worked for the CIA.

Comparing my forest advocacy work to a terrorist who killed thousands – and who put my brother in danger – is an insult to my family members who have dedicated their lives to defending this great nation.
