Column on B and Bs hurtful

This letter is in response to an article written by Mike Drummond which appeared in the Life section of The Union on March 19.

Being an otherwise intelligent middle-aged city folk who moved to Grass Valley to open a bed and breakfast, I guess I missed the motivation of Mr. Drummond’s article, ‘The ABC’s of B and Bs: New definitions of room and board.’ He obviously has never spent a night in a bed and breakfast in Grass Valley or Nevada City, or has taken advantage of our springtime and Christmas tours. I would like to thank him for encouraging our local residents to think of Grass Valley and Nevada City bed and breakfasts when they are considering lodging needs in our area.

Considering all the time, effort, and money our chambers of commerce, Historical Society, downtown association and private owners put into making our area desirable to visitors, it only takes a “small” article like this one to damage our future efforts in Nevada County.

As to why my wife and I open our home to strangers (we even have writers stay with us), I thought we were performing a service for Nevada County, but per Mr. Drummond’s article, it looks like he and we are both wrong.

Another area of concern I have is why The Union would allow such a hurtful, inaccurate article to be printed.
