Nevada County

Genealogical Society

“Fraud and Flippery” is the title of the talk to be given Tuesday by Lynn Schallenberger Wenzel at the monthly meeting of the Nevada County Genealogical Society. Wenzel’s great-great grandfather’s cousin was Moses Schallenberger of the Stevens-Townsend-Murphy party, which crossed the Sierras in 1844 and pioneered the Truckee Pass route to California.

Wenzel, who has traced her ancestry back to Switzerland in the 1600s, was always told Moses was a member of her family. Another ancestor, Aaron Schallenberger, who became a gold miner, arrived in Nevada City in 1849. Wenzel’s talk will be about the history of her family in the Nevada City and Grass Valley area.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, Nevada City.
