Native Daughters of the Golden West

The proposed budget and revisions of the bylaws were discussed at a recent meeting. Several members are planning to participate in the NDGW Children’s Foundation Walk-a-thon. Call 273-1936 for information. The NDGW calendars have been ordered. Call Ethel or Shirley to place your order.



There will be a guided tour of the Grass Valley Video History Museum and the Al Dilts Thimble Theater at Tuesday’s meeting. Meet at the museum at 6 p.m. and bring your own sack refreshments. Anyone interested in joining Native Daughters is welcome.




Mother Lode Toastmasters

New toastmaster Jane Neuwirth won the trophy for best speaker at the Monday meeting at Lutz Center in Grass Valley. Her speech was “A Little Bit About Myself.” Anna Oates was selected best evaluator, and Mary Ann Smith was voted Table Topics speaker of the evening.

Toastmasters is open to all adults who are looking for a supportive group to help improve communications skills. For more information, call Helga Rohl at 470-0122.

Empire Toastmasters

Mary Elizabeth Young was voted best speaker Sept. 6 for “Looking for God.” Young is a new member of Empire Toastmasters, but a veteran of the Early Risers club. Returning member Prema Robins spoke about her connection to Lakshmi, Hindu goddess of wealth and abundance, in “Who is Prema?” Kirby Sechovec shared his opinion on U.S. military action against Iraq in an impromptu “pocket” speech.

Chris Scammon was named best evaluator, and Josh Wimmer won Table Topics, using the word of the day, “bombastic.” Michael Stone led the meeting as Toastmaster.

Empire Toastmasters meets from 1 to 2:15 p.m. every Friday in the meeting room at Cal Fed Bank in Grass Valley. Guests are always welcome. Call Doris Schroeder-Smith, 477-2172; or Sylvia Jordan, 477-0401, for more information.
