Welcome Wagon of the Gold Country

The Welcome Wagon had a successful fund-raising “Secret Garden” luncheon that raised money for three local charities.



The “Every Member Gathering” this month will be a breakfast meeting at 8:15 a.m. on April 17 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge. Dan Gibson, crisis intervention officer at the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, is the featured speaker.




Friends are welcome. Cost is $8 per person. Reservations, which are due by Friday, can be made by calling 477-3750.

Mother Lode Toastmasters

Gary Peterman scored a double win at a recent meeting of the Mother Lode Toastmasters. He was voted the best speaker of the evening and honored as the club’s Toastmaster of the Year, an award given to the Toastmaster who gets the most points for various activities over the course of the year.

Joanna Snider-Lipa was voted as the best evaluator. The best impromptu speaker in the Table Topics portion of the meeting was Joyce Peterman.

Mother Lode Toastmasters meets every Monday at 6:45 p.m. at Larry and Lena’s Pizza Grill, Alta Sierra and Highway 49. Guests are always welcome. For information, call President Robert Rasch at 274-8323.

Sierra Astronomy and Science Explorers

The Sierra Astronomy and Science Explorers will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Imaginarium Science Museum, Ridge Road and Nevada City Highway. The meeting will feature Randy Oliver, who will discuss “Recovery from Disaster: The Story of the Honeybee and the Destructor Mite.” Additional short talks and demonstrations will be given.

Early Risers Toastmasters

Kathy Hillis was selected as better speaker for her recent speech, “New Friends.” She shared stories of friendships made in Bali and Japan. Annabelle Loucks won better evaluator, and Mike McDaniel won the trophy for Table Topics.

Early Risers Toastmasters meets Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. at the Trolley Junction Cafe in Nevada City. Guests are always welcome. Call 477-9777 for more information.

Nevada County Genealogical Society

The Nevada County Genealogical Society will feature Elizabeth Campbell as the speaker at the Helling Library in Nevada City at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Campbell will speak on “Castles in the United Kingdom” and have copies of her book “Castle Hopping in the U.K. with Elizabeth” available for purchase.
