Class on crisis intervention offered

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition in conjunction with Sierra College is offering a course on domestic violence and sexual assault crisis intervention.

The 11-week course held at the Sierra College, Nevada County Campus, meets the state certification requirements for domestic violence and sexual assault crisis counselors. It covers historical, cultural and psychological factors; precursors and effects; relationship of substance abuse; cultural diversity and role expectations; responsibilities and processes of medical, mental health, law enforcement, courts and advocacy professionals; and crisis intervention and counseling techniques. It also examines legal issues, mandated reporting, protective orders, victims’ rights and available resources.

The 3.5 unit course meets from 6 to 9 p.m, Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Sept. 3, at the firehouse on the college’s campus. Interested candidates could become DVSAC volunteer crisis counselors.
