Clarifying Smart Growth

Smart Growth has many factors. All the following considerations must be made in order to have Smart Growth:

1. Complete funding (new facilities or improvements to existing facilities) for potable water, sewers, roads, schools, jobs, electrical substations, phone systems and parks.

2. Increased support for our community services- fire department, police department, county dump, and the Humane Society.

3. Finally, we must consider air quality and congestion in our community due to insufficient planning.

If you have been following any of the proposed developments for Loma Rica, Northstar, Sawmill and Kenny Ranch (which are proposed annexations to the City of Grass Valley), you certainly know that none of these developments are Smart Growth.

Here are a few issues to consider:

1. Our high school is full – 3000-plus students. Where will new students go?

2. Where are all the new elementary school students going to go?

3. Our air quality is unhealthy many summer days. Do we want to add all these new commuters to our community?

4. Our dump is a transfer station. Can we continue to transfer all the new waste?

Get informed (see http://www.gvneighbors.org ). Get involved. Don’t let others decide for you!
