Civil rights important

I must disagree with Jeff Ackerman’s Feb. 14 column, though I don’t believe that I am “screeching” and it’s not because I “just don’t like Bush.” I believe that we can effectively fight terrorism threats while still preserving civil rights.

Judicial approval for domestic surveillance is not about “proper paperwork” but about proper checks and balance. I do not want to give unfettered domestic surveillance rights to the executive branch that brought us the recent FEMA incompetence, got Ds and Fs from the 9/11 commission or wants to jail citizens without due process. As far as I can tell, nobody has made a reasonable case that the current judicial review process is inadequate or can’t be fixed.

Let’s keep some perspective about what we need to do and how we do it. Yes, there are people who want to kill us; we need to work harder and smarter to limit their success. No, we cannot allow our fear to result in loss of the civil rights that make our country great.
