City Council or House of Lords?

Terry Lamphier’s Other Voices letter made for some enlightening but disturbing reading. It appears that the normal review process is being circumvented and the General Plan is being ignored by the Grass Valley City Council in order to “fast track” projects before their potential impact upon the community can be fully assessed. This does a grave disservice to our city planners, The General Plan and city and county taxpayers at large.

I think that the operative term here is that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and that careful planning now will prevent an expensive and possibly unresolvable future problem regarding traffic and infrastructure. If the City Council continues to act in this autonymous and monolithic fashion, what’s the point of even having a planning commission and staffers to study the problem? Who needs a debate or facts and figures that contradict their already preconceived opinions and plans for action? Might as well send them all home and not waste their time.

I think that we, the people, deserve better from our elected city officials.
