Cinematic opinion

All this yawping about Michael Moore’s film. Gotta see it, it’s the truth, or It’s so biased, I won’t set foot in the theater.

Where did we get the idea that a documentary is supposed to be “fair”? Moore’s film isn’t The Truth; it’s an editorial, his cinematic opinion, and that, I think, is what his opponents object to.

Fine. You don’t like what he says, then speak it your way. But when you do, please go beyond non-negotiable sound bites. Democracy isn’t simply the election of whoever buys the most TV ads or controls the voting machines. It’s the exchange of ideas among an informed electorate. The rarity of civil discourse these days endangers our democracy every bit as much as terrorism does.

Moore’s voiced his opinion. I’ll listen carefully to yours, and if American ideals are to survive, I’ll ask you sincerely to hear mine.
