Why is SYRCL (South Yuba River Citizens League) featuring an anarchist tree-sitter during its film festival? Were they aware of Darryl Cherney’s expertise in “monkeywrenching” and his long, close relationship with Earth First!, a radical environmental group espousing anarchy, social disorder and vandalism? The Earth First! journal is full of stories of trespassing, vandalism, tree-sitting, dumpster-diving, shoplifting, and burning of SUVs (125 by one person, 22 by another). What does Darryl Cherney have to offer this community that would be positive or helpful? From his own Web site, which lists 20 rules of activism:

No. 8: Radicalism is relative.

No. 9: Violence is a dominant gene.

Also from his Web site, some quotes: “It’s time for humanity to slip into disaster-mode mentality” and, “we can actually trick the media into getting our message out.”

The disaster-mode mentality is useful for recruiting emotional people, then training them in social disruption. The Earth First! journal glorifies multiple acts of violence, firebombing and arson by the Earth Liberation Front The Unabomber chose his victims from an Earth First! “hit list” and had attended Earth First! meetings. SYRCL should distance itself from people like Darryl Cherney, not embrace them.
