Childers anniversary

Ray and Heather Childers of Grass Valley celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today.

The Childers are long-time residents of Grass Valley, having lived in the area for 71 years. Ray arrived in 1938 when his family moved from Illinois to Grass Valley to work in the mines and the local Purity store. Ray later managed the Chevron gas station at Hills Flat.

Heather moved here from Australia in 1958 to marry Ray, her wartime sweetheart. The couple were married July 28, 1958, in Vancouver, Canada.

The couple has two children, Doug Hume of Armidale, Australia, and his wife Dr. Nadine McRea, and Meg Luken of San Antonio, Texas, and her husband Larry.

They also have four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Ray enjoys repairing clocks and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge #23, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Heather enjoys church gardening, embroidery and looking after her husband.

The family will celebrate their anniversary on two occasions, one this month with local family and friends at the Trolley Junction Restaurant, and again in September when their son Doug arrives from Australia.
