Cheerleading won’t help

I watched President Bush recently talking to a group in Florida, and he was cheerleading. He would say something, walk around holding his microphone, looking over his audience, waving his arm, gathering waves of applause as he said things his audience wanted to hear Ð cheerleading. “No child left behind is working” Ð when educators around the country know it isn’t working – it is underfunded, the emphasis on tests leads to teaching to the test, skills of thinking, of critical thinking, are neglected in favor of rote learning of information that can be regurgitated and machine-scored.

I wish we had a statesman. I see no statesman or stateswoman in either party. If there is one, will he or she come out of hiding? A person with integrity, who knows what a republic is supposed to be, who doesn’t have the ambition to rule the world, to remake other countries in our own flawed image. We have enough unsolved problems at home Ð poverty, illiteracy, crime, homelessness, a massive deficit enabled by borrowing money from China. We need someone who respects religious belief enough to realize that mixing religion and politics leads to disaster for both.

We need a statesperson, not a cheerleader.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
