Check out the facts

Let the debates begin! The accusations and falsehoods are on the rise as the nation begins the debate on Social Security reform. I was really surprised to find a very well written article in the Sacramento Bee on Jan. 3, re: Here’s What’s Wrong With SS,” by James Glassman, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, that laid out a very convincing case, based on facts, that support SS reform. You can read it at

On the other hand I was dismayed to read in our own newspaper on Jan 7, a very misleading article by Jim Groom proposing that SS is not in need of reform. Unfortunately, Jim’s article was not filled with facts but with his own suppositions.

This brings me to the point of my letter. Before you form your own opinion on this subject it would behoove all of us to try to wade through the political hype and search out the facts about SS before making up your minds. Lots of people have opinions, but how many are really knowledgeable and informed? And how many are politically motivated?
