Charges unnecessary

I agree with the comments in Friday’s Letter to the Editor section questioning the CHP’s role in the icy Sunday morning collision on Highway 49.

I too was in the area just after the fatal head-on collision and while bypassing the stopped traffic by going around on Dog Bar, I observed that the road turned from icy to merely wet. Anyone driving SR-49 uphill from Auburn would have experienced wet, but otherwise normal, roads until hitting clear ice.

We question whether CHP performance was adequate under those circumstances. CHP should have known of the icy conditions, particularly when two hours before there had been an ice-caused vehicle overturn nearby. Dramatic signage and slowdown procedures should have been in place, but apparently were not.

Under those circumstances, I don’t understand why, considering the uphill drive, Mr. Burkett would be charged with manslaughter.
