Cartoons not funny

Would we, in this country today, publish cartoons of Jews sitting at tables with moneybags, blacks eating watermelon, Mexicans with big mustaches? I think not.

That the Danish press solicited the cartoons, and the European press reprinted them, is unconscionable and irresponsible.

I haven’t seen the caricatures, but I’m guessing they are at best mean and nasty and not the least bit funny ” unless, of course, one derives humor at the expense of deprecating someone else’s culture and religion.

Whether we agree or disagree with Islamic interpretations of the Quran is not the point. We do not have the “free speech” right to disparage beliefs with which we neither know nor understand.

Jehovah’s Witness has similar proscriptions against idolatry. And religious Jews do not spell out the word God. Are we to make fun of them as well because they don’t fit into our “mainstream christian” ideology? Again, I think not.

Making fun of politicians ” who actually aren’t very funny ” is one thing. Making fun of an entire people’s belief is something else again. We are supposed to be better than that.
