Candidate misled voters

I was really disheartened by candidate Robin Sutherland’s accusations against 4th District Supervisor Izzy Martin and her supporters in a recent letter to the editor. With the elections over, I think we all were looking forward to a few months free of political recriminations. Is this what she learned at SPI’s school for pro-development candidates, which she and buddy Drew Bedwell attended at the company’s expense? Ms. Sutherland’s attack was not welcome in my home.

But if Sutherland wants to continue campaigning, maybe she would explain why she misled voters about her own troubled financial past. For instance, I heard a KNCO interview on Jan. 30 in which Ms. Sutherland claimed that her property taxes were paid on time. But The Union and Sacramento Bee later revealed that Ms. Sutherland was nearly a year late in paying her property taxes.

Then Sutherland denied having tax liens. But an investigation by the Sacramento Bee later confirmed that Sutherland has had $10,000 in tax liens, including a $7,800 tax lien right here in Nevada County.

Honesty, integrity and certainly, fiscal responsibility, are critical qualities we should all look for in our elected officials no matter which side of the development debate we are on. Ms. Sutherland failed on all three counts. If she wants my vote in November, Robin Sutherland should stop the attacks and come clean and admit she misled the voters.
