Bush should be retired early

After months in Iraq, David Kay found no evidence for WMD that President Bush cited to promote preemptive war. Paul O’Neill, former secretary of the Treasury, revealed that Bush pushed for attacking Iraq in the earliest days of his presidency, well before 9/11.

Some believe that President Bush deliberately misled Congress and the public about WMD to win support for his war. Others feel he cherry-picked from intelligence reports only those facts that supported his preconceived notions, fooling himself. Still others think he was poorly advised by neoconservatives in his administration who advocate a post-Cold War agenda for U.S. world dominance.

Whatever Bush’s role, more than 500 American soldiers are dead, 12,000-plus wounded, at least 10,000 Iraqis dead, $160-plus billion gone from our wallets, and international friendships damaged. All to get rid of one lousy dictator who posed no clear and present danger to the United States, who was contained effectively by U.N. sanctions and U.S. air patrols.

With American soldiers expected to be in Iraq for years, the toll of Bush’s mess grows. No matter what the ultimate reasons for the Iraq debacle, President Bush should be retired early.
