Building process should be painful

The Union’s Editorial Board asked the question: Should building a new structure in downtown Nevada City be as painful as pulling teeth? My answer to that question is yes, and maybe it should be as painful as having an arm cut off with no anesthesia.

If this building is approved and it looks cheap or fake, or if it is just too big and unbalances the buildings around it, then we all lose. And we don’t lose for a few weeks or months, we lose for decades.

Let’s just look back at the Elks building, since we are told the same architect is designing this building. We were told that the bricks used in that building would be made to look aged. Well, as we all know, the bricks used for the Elks building look brand new. Also the upper windows look like they could be in any modern office building, and they look wholly out of place.

This new building may be a wonderful new addition to Nevada City, but we need to be very sure. As we all know, once it’s built we are stuck with it for a long, long time.
