Brush burning planned north of Bullards Bar

Under the right weather conditions, Tahoe National Forest officials may soon launch a 333-acre underburning project north of Bullards Bar Reservoir in Yuba County, according to an announcement Wednesday.

The goal will be to reduce smaller fire fuels, such as brush, without damaging larger trees, Forest Service dispatcher Uta Jehnich said. The operation is called the Jaybird Underburning Project and will be near the site of the 1999 Pendola fire.

“This burn will not be initiated until fuel moistures increase to allow for a safe burn. … Timing of these burns is difficult to predict,” said Arnold Olson, fuels officer for TNF’s Downieville Ranger District.
