Broaden our minds

Cal Thomas said our schools do not teach about God. I am a public (not government) schoolteacher who works very hard to see that children are taught about many cultures and beliefs. Does Mr. Thomas think we should be teaching one particular belief in God? If so, whose version should it be? If you wish to have a child learn more about a particular religious belief, send him or her to a church or other organization.

I am not sure what is meant by “returning to real education standards.” I invite you to look at our education standards. Whether you like them or not, they are very high, back-to-basics standards. They do not contain “fads.”

When I taught sixth grade, the curriculum included the study of other religions. A fundamentalist Christian parent volunteered in my classroom. She did not agree with these religious beliefs, but she was happy to have her child learn about them. She wanted her child to have an understanding about the diverse world we live in. I think this would be a better world if more people would be like this parent. Broaden our minds and support public education.
