Suspect arraigned on

revised murder charge

A 24-year-old man accused of fatally bludgeoning another man with a crowbar last summer was arraigned on revised murder charges Monday in Nevada County Superior Court.

David A. Burke II is scheduled to enter pleas Jan. 24 to charges of murder, arson and vehicle theft. The vehicle theft charge and a murder charge enhancement alleging kidnapping were added by the district attorney’s office after Burke last month was bound over for trial. A trial date hasn’t been set.

Burke is accused of fatally beating James Vannberg on July 9 at South Yuba Campground and driving Vannberg in Vannberg’s vehicle to a nearby road, where the victim was beaten again and partially buried. Vannberg’s vehicle was later found torched in the Greenhorn Creek bed.

Burke’s two co-defendants have since entered plea bargains. Heather S. Gereau, 21, was sentenced last month to six months in jail and five years’ probation after pleading no contest to being an accomplice after the fact.

David C. Leffingwell, 24, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and awaits a March sentencing.
