‘Treks through time’ coming soon

Tours of a Native American rock shelter, Gold Rush-era mining district and the historic Henness Pass Trail are among the adventures on the Nevada County Land Trust’s fall calendar of “Treks Through Time.”

The 13 outings on the Treks Through Time are Sept. 11 through Dec. 4 and are open to Land Trust members and nonmembers alike.

The Saturday and Sunday half-day and daylong treks are led by Land Trust volunteers experienced in history, geology, botany, wilderness pursuit and other interests.

Treks are designed for all ages and fitness levels and range from easy hikes and vehicle tours to more adventurous activities. Each trek is rated easy, moderate or strenuous.

Costs vary, with most treks priced at $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Others range to $45.

September treks include a Donner Pass to Roller Pass hike Sept. 11, Sierra glacier country geology trip Sept. 18, passive solar architecture tour Sept. 29, Martis Valley rock shelter tour Sept. 25 and Chalk Bluff mining district tour Sept. 26.

October treks include Lola Montez Lake on Oct. 2, Trabucco Ranch (members only) on Oct. 9, Basque tree carvings on Oct. 23, Henness Pass tour Oct. 24 and Sutter Buttes Ridgetop Trek Oct. 30.

November and December treks include Sutter Buttes Ridgetop Trek on Nov. 6, Sutter Buttes Summit Challenge also on Nov. 6 and Pioneer Ranch oak tree planting on Dec. 4.

The schedule also includes tours of the Julia Morgan-designed North Star House on the North Star Mine property in Grass Valley. The tours are free and are at 9:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month.

Red Cross seeks volunteers

The dual impacts of the recent Hurricane Charley and the current Hurricane Frances in Florida are expected to prompt the largest American Red Cross relief effort since Sept. 11.

The local Red Cross is seeking volunteers who can commit to a minimum two-week assignment, with training provided on site.

The types of volunteer opportunities will vary and will be difficult with long hours and rough living conditions. Volunteers must be in good health and have a desire to serve. The Red Cross is looking for volunteers who are able to both travel immediately and replace workers in the weeks and months to come.

For more information, call Susan King at the Western Nevada County Chapter at 272-3265.

North Church Street closed

Today, North Church Street between West Main Street and Richardson Street will be closed to traffic for a traffic direction change from one way southbound to one way northbound only.

Drivers are asked to observe all construction signs and the instructions of onsite personnel.
