Boys lost on Wolf Mountain found

A hike turned into a search for three San Bernardino brothers who became lost Friday in the Wolf Mountain area.

The boys, Nicholas Morales, 11, his twin brother Eric, and Brandon Morales, 15, were four hours late arriving home from their hike when their grandparents called them on their cell phone, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Evans.

The boys said they were lost – bad news with a storm closing in and darkness approaching.

“We were concerned about impending darkness, the fog, and the storm approaching,” said Evans.

After they were called out at 4 p.m., four Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies and a California Highway Patrol plane searched the area near the American Ranch Court home where the boys were staying with their grandparents. A search and rescue team was also gearing up for duty, said Evans, but was later called off.

The boys’ mother, Claudia Morales, joined in the search with her cell phone.

Deputies found two of the boys within an hour, about a half mile from the house. The third boy, who became separated from his brothers, made it back to his grandparents’ house on his own.

The search was over at 6 p.m.

Evans noted that cell phones were helpful in this case. But people should still take precautions when going on an outing, including notifying others of their trip plans and carrying proper clothing, food and other gear in case they have to bivouac overnight, or in case bad weather hits.
