Body found near tracks

TRUCKEE – The body of an 80-year-old man was found by Truckee authorities beside high Sierra railroad tracks this week.

The man, who apparently was hit by an eastbound train Thursday night, was identified as Robert M. Sullivan of Homewood, a town along Lake Tahoe, said Lt. Dan Johnston of the Truckee Police Department.

Authorities investigated after receiving a call just before 9 p.m. from an engineer of an eastbound train. He reported spotting a body alongside the tracks, Johnston said.

Investigators responded and stopped train traffic for about two hours, Johnson said. Evidence found on the scene indicated the man was hit around 6 p.m., Johnson said.

It was not clear late Friday whether the death was a suicide or accident.
