Big box store: is it needed?

Last year we had to furnish an entire home including carpeting, furniture, appliances, kitchen utensils, beds, etc.

We found we were able to find most of what we needed in Grass Valley and Nevada City and, in many cases, the prices were lower than the big-box stores and, of course, the service was much more personal.

We also found a lot in the many well-run resale shops in the area.

When we first came to the area 10 years ago we would make special trips to the large malls in Marysville and Roseville, but over time, we learned that shopping locally is the way to go if personal service, quick delivery and knowledgeable sales people are important.

We come from a major metropolitan area where big-box stores killed the downtown stores in many communities. We don’t need that here.

Plus, where else can you find four major lumber yards and several excellent hardware stores within minutes of each other for do-it-yourselfers.

Thanks to all the local businesses that make this a great shopping area.
