Ballard adoption botched

My heart breaks for the Ballard family in the loss of Nathaniel, but it is important to remember that the fight over this child is not a custody dispute; it is the result of a botched adoption.

The birth father’s right to due process was ignored from the beginning. Adoption is for children who have no parents, not an excuse for removing children from a parent and bestowing them on another family simply because the new parents are more affluent, more presentable, more “Christian.” I fail to see what is Christian about disregarding the birth father’s rights.

The real tragedy of Nathaniel’s case is that the media coverage will scare families away from adopting through the foster care system, where the need is greatest and where children are not capriciously removed from birth parents without cause.

Prospective adoptive families need to know that the Ballards’ experience is not typical. The Union is colluding with the Ballards in portraying them as the “victims” in the case, when in fact they brought this on themselves by pretending the birth father didn’t exist.
