Bad news on the home front? Have a doughnut

Item: “America’s Cup Yacht Sinks” (AP). So there I am, leafing through the paper, looking for a sign of good news amid the general gloom of stock prices, and my eye lands on the mast poking above the water like a barren tree branch.

I’m not one to engage in dooms-day scenarios or neo-lib breast-beating, but this photo op gave me pause. America’s Cup yacht sinks? Why couldn’t it have just capsized? But sinking? Below the waves? Sure enough, there was the barren mast looking back at me. The only thing missing is the raven, I thought.

Just yesterday I found out the whole medical establishment was wrong about the role of fat in our diets. Then, more revelations about Enron, WorldCom and complicit bank “malfeasance,” as well. (Malfeasance is spelled as Bush says it.)

“Father, take this cup,” I said. The news is all bad on the home front. Cups. The Queen of Cups, the Ace of Cups. Yes, that’s America. The Ace Consumer, the Ace Competitor on the world stage. And we’d rather go down trying. Trying what? Well, trying everything.

It was an 80-footer called “The Stars and Stripes.” Why not just “Conner’s Folly?” And why not the “Texas Cup” or other good name?

I decided to go out for a doughnut and coffee. “Our cup runneth over,” I said. And we never even knew what we had.

Cause of the problem? The rudder shaft broke and tore a hole in the hull. Don’t even think about that one. Go out and have a doughnut, instead.
