Auto mall a bad idea

A nine-acre auto mall is proposed on Idaho-Maryland Road next to Highway 49. The mall includes 32,000 square feet of buildings, a 26-bay service center and acres of asphalt, cars and lights.

At their current site, I can hear the auto dealer’s PA system 12 hours a day, seven days a week from my front porch, so I will not be sorry to see them find a new location. However, there are at least a couple of reasons why relocating to Idaho-Maryland is a bad idea.

First, it would generate even more congestion to the already gridlocked intersection at East Main and Idaho-Maryland. This much debated intersection can only get worse with continued development in that neighborhood.

Second, the presence of the auto mall will jeopardize Highway 49’s Scenic Highway designation. A large part of the pride we feel from living here, as well as our economic base, is due to the ambience we have created in our community. A nine-acre auto mall next to the freeway would diminish both.

That development is completely inappropriate for that location unless we are trying to create “Any Place, USA.” Let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot with poor planning.
