AT and T Broadband runaround

Like many of you, I received notice from AT&T Broadband of proposed changes in channel assignment and removal of C-Span2 in a letter dated Sept. 12. My first reaction was that they can’t be serious in dropping C-Span2, and I put the letter aside.

On Sept.19 (the date of the changes noted in the letter), I observed that in fact C-Span2 was gone. I telephoned AT&T Broadband to complain and suggest they discontinue my connection to their service if C-Span2 was not restored. The person to whom I first spoke knew nothing of the channel reassignments nor of the discontinuation of C-Span2. She transferred me to their “technical” people, who also knew nothing of the reassignment or cancellation and who put me on hold. After several minutes, the call was disconnected.

On a subsequent call, I was told I could not discontinue their service. I then wrote to the “director of products management” for AT&T Broadband and again complained about the loss of C-Span2 and, absent restoration of that service, to discontinue their service.

I just received a telephone call from AT&T Broadband:

– Are you moving?

– No.

– Are you getting a different service?

– No.

– Why do you want to discontinue the cable service from AT&T Broadband?

– Because you have dropped C-Span2.

– Would you be interested in a discount for your service?

– No.

– What would it take to retain you as a customer?

– Restore C-Span2 and add C-Span3.

I have replaced AT&T’s cable with rabbit ears and will now have funds to purchase another five or six books a year. Alas, “Book TV” is only available on C-Span2.
