Assessment balloting unfair

The difference between the proposed Fire Suppression Benefit Assessment and a TAX? Simple: 2/3 of registered voters (you know – one man, one vote) have to approve a tax.

Assessment balloting denies a vote to many voters entirely. Only property owners may vote, only one vote per plot. Those votes are “weighted” by assessment amount; if your house is more expensive than mine, your vote counts for more than mine. If you own more than one plot, you get more votes than I. Translation: large property owners/developers have literally hundreds of votes to pass this. The new fees will be passed along to renters and new home buyers, most of whom have NO vote.

Who’s behind this? Who’s paying an accounting firm to mail out, pay return postage, and tally ballots according to this very disparate, discriminatory “weighted” system BEFORE a public hearing is held?

I wholeheartedly support firefighters and emergency workers. But I do not support this unequitable ballot nor the special interest groups who will profit from it. Vote no on this proposal.
