Appellate court candidates deserve more coverage

Now that the Nevada County sample ballot has arrived in my mail, I’ve started to examine my upcoming voting choices. When I came to the Judicial nominees, I found that there was a complete lack of background material concerning the five 3rd District Appellate candidates. I realize these are nonpolitical posts, but none the less, how does one make an informed judgment about the suitability of these folks?

An inquiry to the County Clerk resulted in the suggestion that I check out my copy of the “Official Voter Information Guide.” It has no helpful information except a suggestion to access the Secretary of State’s Web site. That, too, turned out to be a blind alley. Finally, an inquiry to the Department of Elections led me to a Web site that contains biographies and other useful information. Perhaps it might be helpful for The Union to reprint this information for those without electronic access.

I do applaud The Union for your brief article of Oct. 8, “Judges Educate The Public On Role Jurists Play” by David Mirhadi, . It correctly observes that these judges do perform a very vital and powerful function. Furthermore, the Appellate Court appointments are a steppingstone to California Supreme Court judgeships. These judicial appointments really have effective importance approaching that of the Office of Governor, yet many of us are totally unaware of both the candidates and their potential performance.

I strongly urge you to give this whole matter much more coverage in future editions of The Union.
