Ann Coulter and responsibility

In response to your editor’s note on my letter about The Union and Ann Coulter (“Shame for running Ann Coulter’s column,” Jan. 24):

First: By virtue of your choice to run it, it is your column.

Second: Printing “all points of view” and “serving a diverse community” does not release you from the responsibility to develop discrimination (not censorship) in relation to what you run and from the subsequent repercussions that your choices may have. Inner nobility, I think, is more important than the quest for the dollar (your circulation). The recent corporate scandals are a small example of lost social conscience.

Three: “Causing discomfort now and then” is fine if it encourages one to constantly reflect on one’s own beliefs and discover one’s own weaknesses and strengths. Causing discomfort by promoting extreme thought instead of intelligent thought has, throughout history and more recently, caused some of the most inhumane events one can imagine.

Fourth: The Centre Daily Times’ decision to drop the Coulter column, and yet continue with columns from both sides of the spectrum, proves to me what I am saying about “responsibility” to one’s readers. It’s nobler to acknowledge incorrect decision-making than to continue to justify a wrong decision.
