An outstanding play

There is madness going on at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley for the next two weekends. Actually, it is the kind of madness that is rapier sharp and is playing upon the stage in the form of “The Madwoman of Chaillot,” a topically relevant play directed by Sands Hall and starring some of Nevada County’s leading thespians and a number of promising newcomers. The play deals with themes of love, loss, bad business, evil, hope and lost feathered boas, all resolved by the satisfying ending.

I attended last week’s preview, the first public presentation of the play, and was impressed by the level of professionalism in the acting, sets, costumes and makeup. In the second act, the scene between the three Madwomen was laugh-out-loud hilarious, with delightful and sharp repartee and wonderfully eccentric characterizations and mannerisms.

The Center for the Arts has increasingly been presenting excellent theater, in addition to its more usual compliment of great concerts, dance, and other performance. We have a marvelous organization in our community – be sure to support it by becoming a member of the Center for the Arts and attending Center events. Keep the arts alive in Nevada County!
