Alternatives to war

The issue of the military presence in schools has garnered many responses from The Union readers. Many believe that supporters for alternatives to the military are everything from “al quida Terrorists (sic)” to un-American.

But I have to ask: Why are people threatened by the idea of alternatives to war? Surely, if war is preventable, alternatives should be investigated and discussed, since lives are at stake. What is wrong with the exposure of our children to different viewpoints and allowing them to make informed decisions for themselves?

Furthermore, our children deserve to know all the facts when they enlist with the military. It is perhaps the most important contract these kids will ever sign in their lives and they deserve to know that what their recruiter writes on a contract and what they are signing up for is not always the same thing. Even Colonel Metroka stated on January 30th in a locally televised discussion that his recruiter lied to him.

This country was founded on the idea that contrary views and beliefs should be acceptable, if anything, the spread of information and alternative perspectives is one of the most American virtues, no un-American at all.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
