Aid to Asia – The UN

In response to the letter on the Asian crisis: The UN Disaster Chief made the “stingy” remark when Sec. Powell was on TV and pledged $15 million dollars from the US, that triggered the stingy remark, and he was correct.

As an example, Germany immediately pledged 20 million Euros, ($26 million), sent planes and doctors at once to the area, have since sent crews with drinking water plants, a supply ship with supplies that will dock on Monday, long term military engineers to help rebuild and has now committed $672 million in funds.

That is just one example of foreign assistance. U.S. assistance has now been increased to $350 million and U.S. Marines are now there to help with the cleanup and bring in supplies.

The Iraq war and attempts by those in the Bush government to hurt the U.N. have taken a toll on it. The U.N. needs support and perhaps reform, but it is important for the world and needs support. Remember, in the oil for food fiasco, the U.S. was also involved, big oil companies, several prominent people, this has all been downplayed.

One has to be careful when rattling cages.
