Afraid for the future

I am a very senior citizen, old enough to remember the rise to power of the infamous Adolph Hitler.

In the beginning, Hitler instilled constant fear into the people. Fear of attack, fear that certain groups would take over the economy and that the people would starve, and fear of certain religions.

The German people were kept in a state of continual dread.

Playing on this, Hitler soon began his campaign for total control. Citizens were imprisoned without being charged with any crime, and evidence was withheld from the accused. Homes could be searched and arrests made without due process. They could be held without trial. Letters could be opened and, later, simple forms of listening devices were used to spy on the citizenry.

Torture was regularly used to extract information or supposed confession.

At the request of George W. Bush, and with the approval of the majority of Republican Legislators, all these heinous acts may now be used in this country.

I am so afraid for the future of the United States of America.
