Affordable housing denied?

I am a single parent with two children, and have lived and worked in this community for 12 years. I work full time in a local pharmacy and my children have been students in the Nevada City School District since kindergarten. We love living here and would like nothing more than to purchase a home here. We are like many in this community, who are in need of affordable housing opportunities.

Recently, such an opportunity revealed itself when a local family was given approval by the Nevada City Planning commission to sell their Nevada Street cottages as affordable housing. We were pleased to see such an effort being made to accommodate the working class in Nevada County by acknowledging their need for moderately priced housing. We were saddened when the Nevada City City Council made the decision to deny the Sheatsleys further approval for the project!

The Sheatsleys are a hard-working senior couple who care about Nevada city and about those of us working here and hoping to continue living here. The sale of their Nevada Street cottages as affordable housing was going to make that a possibility.

I’m sure I speak for many who, like myself, are single parents working to support families. We work in fields that support the well being of the community. We shop here. We love living here. This is our home.

We need those, such as those on the Nevada City City Council, to recognize and support avenues made available for affordable housing.

City Council members, let’s change that decision from denied to approved!
