Accountability is patriotic

The Republican Party would have us believe that accountability for one’s actions is unpatriotic. That’s insanity. The stability of our democracy requires laws and requires that we hold those who break those laws accountable.

The Bush administration believes they can get away with illegal wiretapping by cloaking it in the argument that they are protecting us. They also refuse to divulge who they are wiretapping because that is a national security issue. “Trust us,” they say.

Our freedom depends on balance of power. We need to be protected, not only from foreign governments, but also from our own government. It is the law of our country and the balance of power that ensures that.

By not holding this administration accountable, we, in the long run, risk losing our freedom. Where freedom is at stake it is our response to terrorism that threatens us, not the terrorists themselves.

When we protest – an action that defines democracy – we are labeled unpatriotic. This is unbelievably transparent rhetoric. We must not fall for it. Support Russ Feingold in his attempt to censure this president. It is democracy that is at stake.
