A look at what liberals believe

A recently published letter to your paper blamed most of our nation’s failings and shortcomings on the liberals. It is true that liberals have faults a plenty; they are too-often guilty of excessively idealistic (“fuzzy headed”) thinking, and they are generally very sympathetic (“bleeding hearted”) with the needy, the oppressed, and the downtrodden. But they are seldom, if ever, called “Mean Spirited” or – patriotic though they may be – jingoistic. Liberals have led the fights for universal suffrage, emancipation, civil rights, and assistance to the hungry, the ragged, the destitute. Liberals oppose imperialistic wars, including those in Vietnam and Iraq. Liberals have favored the spending of public money on tuition-free schools and universities, on libraries, swimming-pools, parks, and playgrounds. Liberals have backed the labor movement, the eight-hour day, a minimum wage, and safe working conditions.

Liberals believe in freedom for the individual, and regulation of corporations. They consistently oppose infringements on our constitutional and civil rights, and they are appalled at the ever-ballooning national debt. Liberals are quick to question dogmatism, cat, and the sort of hysterical finger-pointing too often embraced by those on the extreme political right.
