Zach Hill brings new band to Magic Theatre Monday

Zach Hill, a previously local rock drummer with a global fan following, will bring his new band Holy Smokes to Nevada City’s Magic Theatre for the first time Monday.

Holy Smokes is comprised of guitarist/vocalist Dan Elkan, guitarist/keyboardist Spencer Seim and bassist Carson McWhirter, all under the proverbial baton of drummer and conductor Hill.

The drummer has graced recordings and live performances for a number of national acts, chief amongst them being Team Sleep, Nervous Cop, Crime in Choir and local favorites Hella.

The first album by Hill and Holy Smokes, “Masculine Drugs,” was released Sept. 14 and includes a children’s storybook written and illustrated by Hill.

Monday’s performance is part of a series of Northern California warm-up shows the band is playing in preparation for a showcase Oct. 15 in New York City for the prestigious CMJ music festival.

“Most of the music on the record was written and recorded simultaneously,” Elkan explained, “so the live band is going to be performing interpretations of selections from the record that have never been played live before. We’ll be playing songs that were never written for a live situation. In a sense, we’re like a cover band in over our heads.”

Admission is $5. Doors open for the all-ages show at 8 p.m. and the show begins at 9 p.m. The Magic Theatre is at 107 Argall Way.

Elkan’s advice to those who choose to attend: “Expect a beautiful mess; bring your earplugs.”
