Yellow journalism

Previous owners and editors of The Union have generally been content to report the local news (and occasionally comment on it later). There is a line between reporting the news on local politics and trying to become an active player in it.

The “new” Union under Jeff Ackerman has been testing that line for months now and finally jumped right over it by initiating the recent series of hit pieces and sharply worded editorials on the generally commendable work restoring the North Star House by Bruce Conklin, the Nevada County Land Trust, and many volunteers. Either that, or The Union has become still more desperate than previous owners to sell papers, and has taken to trying to stir up controversy on its own.

In either case, it sure would be nice to have some more responsible, less yellow journalism back again in our local newspaper.
