Wolf Mountain Bluegrass Festival this weekend

King Wilkie will headline the 13th annual Wolf Mountain Bluegrass Festival Friday through Sunday at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley.

The Charlottesville, Va. sextet takes its name from Bill Monroe’s favorite horse. King Wilkie plays contemporary bluegrass mixed with old-time interpretations. The band has two CDs out, “True Songs” and the latest, “Broke,” on Rebel Records.

About 14 other bands will play during the festival.

Performing Friday only will be Open Road, nominated as Emerging Artist of the Year for the International Bluegrass Music Awards in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Open Road’s album, “Cold Wind,” spent nine months on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey Album chart, peaking at No. 6.

Old-time music will be represented by the Crooked Jades Trio, Acme String Ensemble and the Stairwell Sisters Trio. Lone Prairie will also be on hand to present “cowboy music.”

Vocal and instrument workshops and children’s activities will be held Saturday and Sunday. The Bluegrass Gospel show will return Sunday morning.

Food will be sold all three days.

One-day tickets are $20 Friday and Sunday and $25 Saturday. The festival is free for children 12 and under. Multiple-day discounts are available.
