Winter storm watch issued for Friday over high Sierra

A winter storm watch has been issued for the high Sierra for a system expected to strike after 4 a.m. Friday and linger through Saturday morning.

The storm is forecast to bring up to 3/4 of an inch of rain to the foothills and one foot of new snow at 5,000 feet and above, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento. A couple of inches of snow are expected at 3,000 feet, with the possibility of snow as low as 2,500 feet.

Strong winds are also forecast for the high Sierra, with gusts up to 60 mph over passes causing swirling snow and treacherous travel. Drivers are advised to bring tire chains, food, water, extra clothing and a flashlight if they must travel in the mountains during the storm.

Today’s foothill skies will be mostly sunny with a slight wind. Temperatures will be in the upper 50s, with tonight’s low in the upper 30s.

Skies are expected to start clearing again Saturday afternoon after the storm passes through. Sunny to partly cloudy skies are forecast throughout the Sierra Saturday night through Wednesday.

Foothill temperatures are expected in the lower 50s Saturday, climbing into the 60s for Sunday through Wednesday. Night lows are predicted in the 30s Friday through Sunday, and in the 40s Monday through Wednesday.
