Wilmer Bennie

Memorial services for Wilmer T. Bennie of Grass Valley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at 16117 Greenhorn Road in Grass Valley. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Mr. Bennie died Friday, Jan. 11, at a local hospital. He was 89.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1912, in Grand Island, Neb., to Joseph and Heldur Bennie. Mr. Bennie worked for 20 years for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, retiring in 1967 as a battalion chief. He was a member of the Grass Valley Elks Lodge, Nevada County SIRS and the Nevada County Rock Hound Club. He was an avid rockhound. He enjoyed watching football on TV and making jewelry.

Mr. Bennie is survived by his daughters Ruth Ann Bennie Clemetson of Chandler, Ariz., and Margaret MacPhil of Santa Rosa; stepdaughters Kathie Zanella of Joshua Tree, Jeanie Magliulo of Rohnert Park and Terri Salvo of Yukon, Okla.; stepsons Patrick McClure of Grass Valley and Dee McClure of Roy, Utah; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Dorothy Bennie, on Nov. 16, 2001; and son Vincent Harder in 1965.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fireman’s Relief Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
